Presentation 1: 18:00 — Bartłomiej Oleś – Paradoxes of Jevons in AI: a billion small decisions that change the world. What happens when a million decisions cost less than pizza?
Description: In the 19th century, William Stanley Jevons noticed something strange: the less coal steam machines consumed, the more coal the world burned. History is repeating itself, only instead of coal we have AI, and instead of steam machines our applications. In September, TypeSafe AI showed Jev, a model named just in honor of Jevons, who does not generate the text at all. Instead, he makes decisions: chooses, evaluates and responds yes/no, while giving how sure he is. The Internet immediately did what the internet does best with him: he made him play Pokémony, play chess, cut down sponsors from YouTube, hide spoilers in comments, build a town of 10,000 virtual residents outraged by every post, and while waking DevOpsów on-call only when something really burns. We'll see a lot of these in session, and then we'll figure out what it means for us, and which ifs in our code will replace the AI.
